How to Get High Retention YouTube Views in Video Marketing

August 18, 2015 By Savvy 1 Comment

Youtube audience retentionAre viewers watching your entire video? Getting high retention YouTube views is a must if you are video marketing.

YouTube relies heavily on watch time for ranking your videos in search. Optimizing video titles, descriptions and tags is simply not enough to boost your search results.

If your YouTube viewer retention rates are low, it won’t help you be discovered in search. It can actually penalize you.

Audience retention measures how engaged your viewers are. How long they watch any individual video. Are they watching the whole thing or just the first few seconds?

Low YouTube audience retention also leads to low subscribers and likes on your videos. Are you checking your YouTube audience retention rates to find out? It is the most important metric you should be evaluating for your videos.

You can find audience retention in the Analytics section of your YouTube channel.

Let’s fix that!

Why You Don’t Have High Retention YouTube Views

Pay attention to the first 15 seconds of your video. That is where the majority of viewers drop off. Check your Audience Retention analytics to see where yours are dropping off.

The most common reason is not communicating value to your viewer immediately. How do you start your videos? If you open your videos with your name, your website, your location and a long video bumper,

You will likely lose audience retention in those first 15 seconds.

Don’t make a viewer listen to all that for 30 seconds. They will be gone!

Get High Retention YouTube Views Starting at the Beginning of a Video

Here are 3 tips to increase your YouTube audience retention and therefore increase YouTube views:

  1. At the start, convey the value of your video to get high retention YouTube views. Skip the introductions. If a person is searching for information, no one really cares who you are or where you live. Save that stuff for end of your video. Your channel, your blog and any branding will convey that information.
  2. Smile and be personable. This will help people feel more connected to you.
  3. Get to the point. No one wants to sit through your ramblings about things that don’t matter to them.

If your channel is not growing the way you want it to, I challenge you to implement these tips to increase YouTube retention views.

Remember, if you have high YouTube retention views, that means engaged viewers. In turn, there’s a better chance they will Like, comment, subscribe and share your videos.
